Frequently asked questions

Short answers about lessons, the free trial, exams and joining. If your question is not here, message us on WhatsApp.

The free trial

Is there a free trial?

Yes. Your first lesson is a free 30-minute one-to-one lesson with a tutor, with no obligation to continue.

How do I book it?

Use the Book a free trial button, or message us on WhatsApp for more information. We then contact you to agree a time that suits you.

What do I need for the trial?

Your instrument, a device with a camera and microphone, and a steady internet connection.

How lessons work

Are lessons live?

Yes. Every lesson is live with a tutor on Google Meet. Materials and assignments are shared through Google Classroom.

How long is a lesson?

A standard lesson is 30 minutes. Longer lessons can be arranged to suit you.

How many lessons are there each week?

The standard is two lessons a week. Three or more can be arranged.

Are lessons one-to-one?

Yes. If you are a group, such as a family, a school or a church, we can arrange lessons for your group.

Which days and times are available?

We agree times that fit your time zone and schedule.

Does the same tutor teach every lesson?

Yes. Tutors are assigned by Piedbells. If you feel you are not getting what you need, you can ask for a change.

Are lessons recorded?

Only where consent has been given, and only for quality assurance. If a parent declines, the lesson is not recorded.

Do lessons stop during school holidays?

No. Lessons run all year, and some students join just for the holidays.

What if I miss a lesson?

Tell your tutor. A make-up lesson can be arranged. If a tutor ever has to cancel, you are told ahead of time.

What you can learn

Which instruments do you teach?

Piano, violin, guitar, trumpet, flute, saxophone, cello and drums. Ask us about other instruments. We also teach voice, music theory and composition.

What levels do you teach?

Beginner to Grade 8, for all ages. No experience is needed.

How young can a child start?

From about age 4.

Do I need my own instrument?

Yes, you need one to practise on between lessons. If you are buying your first instrument, talk to us before you buy and your tutor will advise on what suits a beginner.

Is there practice between lessons?

Yes. Your tutor sets a short daily practice.

Do you teach children with special educational needs?

Yes, including children with autism, in a calm and supportive setting. Tell us about your child’s needs when you book.

Do you teach Maths and English?

Yes. We offer live one-to-one tutoring from Pre-K to 8th grade, following the curriculum the student’s school uses, such as the British or US curriculum. See Maths and English tutoring.

Exams and scholarship

Do students have to take exams?

No. Exams are optional. We prepare students who want to take them.

Which exam boards do you prepare for?

ABRSM, Trinity, Rockschool and MUSON.

How are exams booked and taken?

We can help you book. Where and how the exam is taken depends on the exam board: some offer online exams, and others use exam centres near you. If you are already entered for an exam, we can prepare you for it.

What is the scholarship?

It covers examination fees for deserving students. It is open all year to current music students at MUSON, and decisions take 5 to 10 business days. Read about the scholarship.

Progress and performing

How will I know how my child is progressing?

Parents receive a progress report each month.
